Spring Light

April marks the beginning of spring in Rovaniemi, though snow remains on the ground for much of the month. The days are much longer, and the temperatures are milder, making it a great time for both winter and early spring activities. The Northern Lights may still be visible in the early part of the month, but the focus shifts towards the emerging spring landscapes and milder weather.

What to pack for April

The absolute essentials for this month, rent what you don't want to bring.

  • Adapt to Changing Weather: Wear a waterproof jacket, and layer with a fleece or light sweater.
  • Footwear: Waterproof boots are ideal as the snow starts to melt, creating slushy conditions.
  • Tip: A lighter hat and gloves are often enough, but keep warmer options handy for cooler days.

Need full Arctic gear? Rent a complete set (jacket, pants, boots, gloves) and skip the packing.

April, questions we hear

Early April is full winter: deep snow, all winter activities running. By late April the snow starts to melt and rivers begin to thaw, a true shoulder season with very long days.

Early April still offers some aurora chances, especially in the first two weeks when nights are dark enough. After mid-April the sky stays too bright for aurora hunting.

Most husky kennels and reindeer farms still operate through mid-April. Ranua Zoo is a highlight, April is when the first baby animals are born. Easter brings Finnish family traditions and some restaurants offer festive menus.

Waterproof boots are essential (slush is common), plus light thermal layers, a packable rain jacket, and sunglasses. Temperatures swing between -5°C and +8°C, so versatile layering wins.
