Rovaniemi Beyond the Tourist Trail

Local tips for Rovaniemi that go past Santa Claus Village, plus the small, sustainable choices that make a Lapland trip better.

Most visitors see Santa Claus Village, buy a souvenir, and fly home. Stay a day longer and Rovaniemi opens up. We live here, and these are the places and habits we point friends toward once they have ticked off the village.

Beyond the Tourist Trail

Santa Claus Village earns its spot on every itinerary, but the rest of the city rewards anyone willing to look further. None of these are far: Rovaniemi's centre is compact, and most sit within a short walk or a 20-minute drive.

  • Arktikum Museum: The permanent exhibition on Sámi culture and Arctic science explains why Lapland looks and feels the way it does. The glass tunnel reaching toward the Ounasjoki river is worth the visit on its own. Budget two hours, and go in late afternoon for the best light on the building.
  • Korundi House of Culture: A former bus depot turned art museum, home to the Rovaniemi Art Museum and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. A good rainy-day or short-daylight option in the centre.
  • Pilke Science Centre: Hands-on exhibits about the northern forest, built almost entirely of wood. Family-friendly and right next to Arktikum.
  • Reindeer farms: A working farm outside the city lets you feed the herd and take a sleigh ride, with a herder who answers your questions. Quieter and more honest than the village pens, and most farms run from December into April.
  • Ice fishing: Drill a hole, drop a line, and wait in the silence of a frozen lake. A local guide brings the auger and the warm drinks, and you might land your own dinner. Season runs roughly December to April, once the ice is thick enough.
  • Arctic Circle Hiking Area: Marked trails through pine forest north of the city, far enough from streetlights for a clear night sky. Good in every season, from snowshoeing in winter to berry picking in late summer.

Getting Around

The centre is walkable end to end in fifteen minutes. For Santa Claus Village, 8 km north, take bus #8, which runs through the centre regularly. For day trips and tours, most providers include pickup from your accommodation, so you rarely need a car. If you want one anyway, book ahead in winter, when stock is tight.

Photographing the Trip

  • Dress for standing still. You move less when you photograph, so add a layer. Waterproof boots, a beanie, and mittens make the difference between five minutes outside and an hour.
  • Keep your battery warm. Cold drains phone and camera batteries in minutes below freezing. Carry the device in an inner pocket against your body, and bring a spare you have kept warm to swap in.
  • Bring a small tripod for the aurora. Phones and cameras need a steady two to ten second exposure to capture the lights. Hand-held shots come out blurred.

Travelling Lightly

Lapland stays beautiful because people look after it. A few choices keep it that way without changing your trip:

  • Cut your waste. Refill a bottle from the tap, which is among the cleanest water in the world here, and buy food grown or made nearby.
  • Spend with locals. Family-run restaurants, shops, and guesthouses keep money in the community and usually give you the better story. We are biased toward family-owned places.
  • Take the train or share the ride. Check VR for trains, including the overnight service from Helsinki, and Matkahuolto for buses. Carpool to tours instead of driving alone where you can.
