Free Things to Do in Rovaniemi

You don't need to spend hundreds to have an incredible time. These are our favourite free experiences that most tourists miss.

Lapland activities can add up fast. Husky safaris, snowmobile tours, reindeer rides, they're amazing, but they're not cheap. The good news? Some of the best experiences in Rovaniemi are completely free.

Ounasvaara Nature Trails

The forested hill right next to the city centre has kilometres of maintained trails. In winter, they're perfect for a quiet walk through snow-covered forest. In summer, the midnight sun views from the hilltop are extraordinary.

Getting there: Walk from the city centre across the Jätkänkynttilä bridge. The trails start immediately.

Our tip: Go at sunset (or around 2 PM in December, yes, the sun sets that early). The colours through the trees are stunning.

The Arctic Circle Line

The official Arctic Circle runs through Rovaniemi. While Santa Claus Village charges for the "official" photo with Santa, walking across the painted Arctic Circle line on the ground is free and surprisingly satisfying.

Where: Santa Claus Village, 8 km north of the centre. Bus #8 runs there regularly.

Arktikum Museum Park

The museum itself has an entrance fee, but the outdoor area and the glass tunnel extending toward the river are free to explore. The architecture alone is worth the visit, and in winter the snow-covered surroundings are beautiful.

When to go: Late afternoon for the best light on the building.

Frozen River Walking

When the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers freeze (usually December through April), locals walk and ski across them. It's a surreal experience, walking across a massive frozen river with the city skyline in the background.

Safety note: Only walk where you see other people walking. The ice is thick and safe on established routes, but don't venture to unfamiliar areas alone.

Jätkänkynttilä Bridge

Rovaniemi's iconic "Lumberjack's Candle" bridge is beautiful at any time of year. The eternal flame at the top burns 24/7. Walk across at twilight for the best atmosphere.

Local Library (Rovaniemi City Library)

One of Finland's most beautiful modern libraries. Warm, welcoming, and a perfect place to spend an hour if the weather turns harsh. Free WiFi, comfortable seating, and a great architecture.

Address: Jorma Eton tie 6

Northern Lights (Obviously)

The best free show in Rovaniemi. You don't need a tour, just drive or walk away from city lights on a clear night. Check the aurora forecast and head to Ounasvaara or any spot with an open northern horizon.

Sauna Culture

If you're staying at a hotel or Airbnb with a sauna, use it. It's free, it's the most Finnish thing you can do, and after a cold day outside, it's absolute bliss.

Etiquette: Shower before entering. Sit on a towel. No swimwear in traditional saunas (though tourist saunas are more relaxed about this).

Summer Bonus: Midnight Sun

From early June to early July, the sun doesn't set. At all. Walking along the river at 2 AM in broad daylight is a surreal, unforgettable experience that costs nothing.

Our Take

The paid activities in Rovaniemi are genuinely worth it, but you don't need to fill every day with expensive tours. Mix in these free experiences and you'll see a side of Rovaniemi that most tourists miss entirely.
